Spartanburg County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Spartanburg .

geography

The county is located in northwestern South Carolina, borders North Carolina to the north and has an area of ​​2,122 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Polk County, North Carolina, Rutherford County, North Carolina, Cherokee County , Union County , Laurens County, and Greenville County .

Like all of northern South Carolina, the county is included in the Piedmont region.

Spartanburg County was formed on March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868, it became a county again. It was named after the Spartan Regiment South Carolina during the American War of Independence .

The Spartanburg Historic District is one of 69 entries for the county in the NRHP.

As of the 2000 census , Spartanburg County had 253,791 people in 97,735 households and 69,294 families. The population density was 121 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.09 percent white, 20.79 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 1.47 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.35 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.04 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.79 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.01.

The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 37,579 , and the median income for a family is $ 45,349. Males had a median income of $ 33,002 versus $ 23,911 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,738. 9.2 percent of families and 12.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
