Greenville County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Greenville .

The county is located in northwestern South Carolina, borders North Carolina to the north and has an area of 2059 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Transylvania County, North Carolina, Henderson County, North Carolina, Polk County, North Carolina, Spartanburg County , Laurens County , Abbeville County , Anderson County, and Pickens County .
history
Greenville County was formed March 22, 1786, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. The background of the name is unclear: On the one hand, the name could go back to Nathanael Greene , who was a general in the American Revolutionary War, or to the early settler Isaac Green (1762–?), Who built a flour mill in the county. Another possibility is a descriptive naming according to the foliage in this region.

According to the 2000 census , Greenville County had 395,357 people in 149,556 households and 101,997 families. The population density was 186 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.53 percent white, 18.30 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 1.38 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.14 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 149,556 households, 31.9 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers, 31.8 percent were non-families, 26.8 percent were single households, and 8.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
24.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.6 percent between 18 and 24, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 91.6 males.
The median income for a household in the 41,149 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 50,332 US dollars. Males had a median income of $ 37,313 and females $ 26,034. The per capita income was $ 22,081. 7.9 percent of families and 10.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
