Jasper County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Ridgeland .

The county is located in the extreme south of South Carolina, borders Georgia in the southwest , with its southernmost tip on the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​1812 square kilometers, of which 113 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hampton County , Beaufort County , Chatham County, Georgia, and Effingham County, Georgia.

history

Jasper County was formed in 1912. It was named after William Jasper (approx. 1750–1779), a sergeant of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment in the American War of Independence .

As of the 2000 census , Jasper County had 20,678 people in 7,042 households and 5,091 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 42.39 percent white, 52.69 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.75 percent of the population.

Of the 7,042 households, 34.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.1 percent were married couples living together, 18.2 percent were single mothers, 27.7 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent were single households, and 8.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.22 people.

26.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.3 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 111 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 111.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,727 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,793. Males had a median income of $ 29,407 versus $ 21,055 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,161. 15.4 percent of families and 20.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
