Kershaw County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Camden .

The county is located in north-central South Carolina, about 25 miles from North Carolina , and has an area of 1917 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lancaster County , Chesterfield County , Darlington County , Lee County , Sumter County , Richland County, and Fairfield County .
history
Kershaw County was formed in 1798. It was named after Joseph Kershaw , a South Carolina politician.
Three places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Camden Battlefield , Bethesda Presbyterian Church, and Mulberry Plantation . 19 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Kershaw County had 52,647 people in 20,188 households and 14,918 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.61 percent white, 26.29 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.68 percent of the population.
Of the 20,188 households, 33.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.8 percent were married couples living together, 13.6 percent were single mothers, 26.1 percent were non-families, 22.6 percent were single households, and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 7.6 percent between 18 and 24, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 38,804 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,836. Males had a median income of $ 32,246 versus $ 22,714 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,360. 9.7 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
