Lancaster County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Lancaster .

The county is located in northern South Carolina, borders North Carolina and has an area of 1,438 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Union County (North Carolina), Chesterfield County , Kershaw County , Fairfield County , York County, and Chester County .
history
Lancaster County was formed in 1785. It was named after Lancaster County , Pennsylvania , since the county's Scottish-Irish settlers came from there and began to settle here in the 1750s.
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Lancaster County Courthouse and the Lancaster County Jail . 27 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Lancaster County had 61,351 people in 23,178 households and 16,850 families. The population density was 43 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.03 percent white, 26.86 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.89 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.59 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 23,178 households, 33.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.6 percent were married couples living together, 15.5 percent were single mothers, 27.3 percent were non-families, 23.7 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.01.
25.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 95.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 34,688 , and the median income for a family was $ 40,955. Males had a median income of $ 30,176 versus $ 22,238 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,276. 9.7 percent of families and 12.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
