Laurens County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Laurens .

The county is located in central northwest South Carolina and has an area of 1875 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Spartanburg County , Union County , Newberry County , Greenwood County , Abbeville County , Anderson County, and Greenville County .
history
Laurens County was formed in 1785. It was named after Henry Laurens , the third president of the Continental Congress .

According to the 2000 census , Laurens County had 69,567 people in 26,290 households and 18,876 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.57 percent white, 26.23 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.95 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.94 percent of the population.
Of the 26,290 households, 32.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.1 percent were married couples living together, 15.6 percent were single mothers, 28.2 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households, and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.01.
25.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,933 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,739. Males had a median income of $ 30,402 versus $ 21,684 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,761. 11.6 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
