Lee County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Bishopville .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of South Carolina and covers an area of ​​1,065 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Darlington County , Florence County , Sumter County, and Kershaw Counties .

history

Lee County was formed on February 25, 1902. It was named after Robert Edward Lee, the commanding general of the Confederate in the American Civil War . The regional Lee Correctional Institution has existed since 1993 .

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 20,119 people in 6,886 households and 4,916 families. The population density was 19 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 35.03 percent white, 63.56 percent African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.31 percent of the population.

Of the 6,886 households, 32.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 23.8 percent were single mothers, 28.6 percent were non-families, 25.9 percent were single households, and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.23 people.

25.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.0 percent between 18 and 24, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 101.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 26,907 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,209. Males had a median income of $ 26,512 versus $ 18,993 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,896. 17.7 percent of families and 21.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
