York County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is York .

The county is located in northern South Carolina, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 1802 square kilometers, of which 34 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cleveland County, North Carolina, Gaston County, North Carolina, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, Lancaster County , Chester County , Union County, and Cherokee County .

York County was formed in 1798. It was named after York County in Pennsylvania , the former home of many settlers.

According to the 2000 census , York County had 164,614 people in 61,051 households and 44,933 families. The population density was 93 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.25 percent white, 19.16 percent African American, 0.85 percent Native American, 0.89 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.93 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.96 percent of the population.
Of the 61,051 households, 35.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers, 26.4 percent were non-families, 21.3 percent were single households, and 6.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.5 percent between 18 and 24, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 94 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 44,539 , and the median income for a family was $ 51,815. Males had a median income of $ 36,713 versus $ 24,857 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,536. 7.3 percent of families and 10.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
