Laurens County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Laurens .

The county is located in central northwest South Carolina and has an area of ​​1875 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Spartanburg County , Union County , Newberry County , Greenwood County , Abbeville County , Anderson County, and Greenville County .

history

Laurens County was formed in 1785. It was named after Henry Laurens , the third president of the Continental Congress .

The Charlton Hall Plantation House is one of the county's 26 entries in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , Laurens County had 69,567 people in 26,290 households and 18,876 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 71.57 percent white, 26.23 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.95 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.78 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,933 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,739. Males had a median income of $ 30,402 versus $ 21,684 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,761. 11.6 percent of families and 14.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
