Sumter County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Sumter .
geography
The county is located northeast of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of 1766 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lee County , Florence County , Clarendon County , Calhoun County , Richland County, and Kershaw County .
history
Sumter County was formed a judicial district on December 17, 1798 and became a county on April 1, 1868. It was named after Thomas Sumter , a general in the American Revolutionary War and a long-time member of Congress .
Three places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Millford Plantation , Church of the Holy Cross and Borough House Plantation . 27 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 29, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Sumter County had 104,646 people in 37,728 households and 27,616 families. The population density was 61 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.13 percent white, 26.68 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.90 percent Asian, 0.06 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.80 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.83 percent of the population.
Of the 37,728 households, 36.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2 percent were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent were single households, and 8.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.17.
28.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.5 percent between 18 and 24, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 33,278 , and the median income for a family was $ 38,970. Males had a median income of $ 28,083 versus $ 21,162 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,657. 13.1 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
