Newberry County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Newberry .
geography
The county is located in central northwest South Carolina and has an area of 1,676 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Union County , Fairfield County , Lexington County , Richland County , Saluda County , Greenwood County, and Laurens County .
history
Newberry County was formed March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868, it became a county again. The background to the name is unclear: the name may go back to John Newberry, who was an officer in the American Revolutionary War , or to early settlers who had the family name Newberry or Newbury. It is also conceivable to name it after cities called Newbury in England or America.

According to the 2000 census , Newberry County had 36,108 people in 14,026 households and 9,804 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.02 percent white, 33.12 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.29 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.30 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.90 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.25 percent of the population.
Of the 14,026 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.2 percent were married couples living together, 16.1 percent were single mothers, 30.1 percent were non-families, 26.5 percent were single households, and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
24.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 32,867 , and the median income for a family was $ 40,580. Males had a median income of $ 29,871 versus $ 21,274 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,045. 13.6 percent of families and 17.0 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
