Marlboro County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Bennettsville .

The county is located in northeastern South Carolina, borders North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,257 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Anson County, North Carolina, Richmond County, North Carolina, Scotland County, North Carolina, Robeson County, North Carolina, Dillon County , Florence County , Darlington County, and Chesterfield County .

history

Marlboro County was formed March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, it became a separate county again. It was named after John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough , the well-known British general in the War of the Spanish Succession and politician.

According to the 2000 census , Marlboro County had 28,818 people in 10,478 households and 7,334 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.49 percent white, 50.73 percent African American, 3.36 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian and 0.24 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.95 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.71 percent of the population.

Of the 10,478 households, 32.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.6 percent were married couples living together, 22.2 percent were single mothers, 30.0 percent were non-families, 26.9 percent were single households and 11.0 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.14.

26.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 9.3 percent between 18 and 24, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,598 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,019. Males had a median income of $ 25,896 versus $ 20,590 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,385. 17.7 percent of families and 21.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
