Lexington County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Lexington .

The county is located just west of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of 1963 square kilometers, of which 152 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Richland County , Orangeburg County , Calhoun County , Aiken County , Saluda County, and Newberry County .
history
Lexington County was formed in 1804. It was named after the Battle of Lexington in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Lexington County had 216,014 people in 83,240 households and 59,849 families. The population density was 119 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.18 percent white, 12.63 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 1.05 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.79 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.98 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.92 percent of the population.
Of the 83,240 households, 35.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers, 28.1 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households and 6.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.01.
26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.3 percent between 18 and 24, 31.6 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 44,659 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,637. Males had a median income of $ 36,435 versus $ 26,387 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,063. 6.4 percent of families and 9.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
