Cherokee County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Gaffney .

The county is located in northern South Carolina, bordering North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,029 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by North Carolina's Rutherford Counties and Cleveland Counties , Union Counties and Spartanburg Counties .

history

Cherokee County was formed on February 25, 1897. It was named after the Cherokee Indian people .

According to the 2000 census , Cherokee County had 52,537 people in 20,495 households and 14,612 families. The population density was 52 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.92 percent white, 20.56 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.08 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.01.
