Clarendon County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Manning .

The county is east of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of ​​1802 square kilometers, of which 229 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sumter County , Florence County , Williamsburg County , Berkeley County , Orangeburg County, and Calhoun County .

history

Clarendon County was formed March 12, 1785 and dissolved in 1800. In 1855 the county was formed again. It was named after Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon , an English statesman and Lord Proprietor of the Province of Carolina .

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Clarendon County had 32,502 people in 11,812 households and 8,599 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 44.93 percent white, 53.14 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.88 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 11,812 households, 31.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.5 percent were married couples living together, 19.8 percent were single mothers, 27.2 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households, and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.12.

25.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.5 percent between 18 and 24, 25.1 percent between 25 and 44, 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 94.2 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,131 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,951. Males had a median income of $ 28,459 versus $ 20,011 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,998. 18.7 percent of families and 23.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
