Chesterfield County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Chesterfield .

The county is located in northern South Carolina, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 2087 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by North Carolina counties of Union County , Anson Counties , and Richmond Counties , Marlboro Counties , Darlington Counties , Kershaw Counties , and Lancaster Counties .
history
Chesterfield County was formed March 12, 1785 and converted into a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. It was named after the statesman and writer Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield , whose published letters to his son were popular in America.
Nine structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Chesterfield County had 42,768 people in 16,557 households and 11,705 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.34 percent white, 33.22 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.04 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.75 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.27 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,557 households, 33.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 49.6 percent were married couples living together, 16.3 percent were single mothers, 29.3 percent were non-families, 25.9 percent were single households, and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.05.
26.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 23.9 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,483 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,200. Males had a median income of $ 30,205 versus $ 20,955 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,233. 16.7 percent of families and 20.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
