Darlington County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Darlington .

The county is located in northeastern South Carolina, is about 25 miles north of North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,468 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marlboro County , Florence County , Lee County , Kershaw County, and Chesterfield Counties .

history

Darlington County was formed March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. It was probably named after the English city of Darlington.

One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Coker Experimental Farms . 52 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 27, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Darlington County had 67,394 people in 25,793 households and 18,441 families. The population density was 46 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.98 percent white, 41.70 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.52 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,087 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,662. Males had a median income of $ 30,947 versus $ 20,998 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,283. 16.4 percent of families and 20.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
