Greenwood County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Greenwood .

The county is located in northwest South Carolina, is about 30 km from Georgia in the southwest and has an area of 1,199 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Laurens County , Newberry County , Edgefield County , Saluda County , McCormick County, and Abbeville County .
history
Greenwood County was formed on March 2, 1897 and named after the city of Greenwood , the name of which goes back to the pronounced foliage in the region.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Fort Ninety Six National Historic Site . 21 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Greenwood County had 66,271 people in 25,729 households and 17,753 families. The population density was 56 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.57 percent white, 31.74 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.71 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.87 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 25,729 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.7 percent were married couples living together, 16.1 percent were single mothers, 31.0 percent were non-families, 26.3 percent were single households, and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
25.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 84.6 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,702 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,022. Males had a median income of $ 30,759 versus $ 23,820 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,446. 9.9 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
