Chester County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Chester .

The county is located in northern South Carolina, about 40 km from North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,518 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: York County , Lancaster County , Fairfield County, and Union County .

history

Chester County was formed March 12, 1785, and became a judicial district on January 1. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. It was named after Chester County in Pennsylvania, from which many of the Scottish-Irish settlers came.

According to the 2000 census , Chester County had 34,068 people in 12,880 households and 9,338 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.93 percent white, 38.65 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.75 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.11.

26.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 87.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,425 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,087. Males had a median income of $ 30,329 versus $ 21,570 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,709. 11.9 percent of families and 15.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
