Charleston County is a county in the US state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Charleston .

The county is located in southwest South Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​3517 square kilometers, of which 1139 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Berkeley County , Georgetown County , Colleton County, and Dorchester County .

history

Charleston County was formed in 1769 as a judicial district from parts of Berkeley County and Colleton County. On April 16, 1868, it received the status of an independent county. It was named after King Charles II of England who restored monarchy to England after the death of Oliver Cromwell.

According to the 2000 census , Charleston County had 309,969 people in 143,326 households and 97,448 families. The population density was 130 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.92 percent white, 34.49 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 1.12 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.99 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.40 percent of the population.

Of the 123,326 households, 28.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.2 percent were married couples living together, 15.9 percent were single mothers, 37.2 percent were non-families, 28.3 percent were single households and 8.1 percent were living with people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 3.01.

23.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 12.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 90.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,810 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,139. Males had a median income of $ 32,681 versus $ 25,530 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,393. 12.4 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line.
