Barnwell County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Barnwell .
geography
The county is located in southwest South Carolina, borders Georgia and has an area of 1,443 square kilometers, of which 23 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Aiken County , Bamberg County , Orangeburg County , Allendale County, and Burke County, Georgia.
history
The county was formed on March 12, 1785 and was first named Winton County . It was dissolved in 1791 and created on January 1, 1800 as a judicial district with its current name. On April 16, 1868 it was again given the status of an independent county. The background to the naming is not completely clear: the name could go back to John Barnwell, who served as an officer in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution and was a member of the South Carolina Senate . Other possible namesakes include officer and Senator Robert Barnwell and settler and militia leader John Barnwell .

As of the 2000 census , Barnwell County had 23,478 people in 9,021 households and 6,431 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 55.18 percent white, 42.55 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.72 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.39 percent of the population.
Of the 9,021 households, 34.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.4 percent were married couples living together, 19.3 percent were single mothers, 28.7 percent were non-families, 25.6 percent were single households, and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.08.
28.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 86.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,591 , and the median income for a family was $ 35,866. Males had a median income of $ 31,161 versus $ 21,904 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,870. 17.9 percent of families and 20.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
