Georgetown County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Georgetown .

The county is located in eastern South Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 2,681 square kilometers, of which 570 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marion County , Horry County , Berkeley County , Charleston County, and Williamsburg County .
history
Georgetown County was formed as a judicial district in 1769 and became an independent county on April 16, 1868. It was named after King George II of Great Britain , King of Ireland , Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg (Hanover) and German Elector .
Three places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , Atalaya and Brookgreen Gardens , Plantange Hopsewee, and Joseph H. Rainey House . 37 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 28, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Georgetown County had 55,797 people in 21,659 households and 15,854 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.69 percent white, 38.61 percent African American, 0.14 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.81 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.65 percent of the population.
Of the 21,659 households, 30.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.1 percent were married couples living together, 15.1 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 23.3 percent were single households and 9.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.01.
25.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 25.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 88.4 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,312 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,554. Males had a median income of $ 31,110 versus $ 20,910 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,805. 13.4 percent of families and 17.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line.

There are four parishes in Georgetown County, one city and three towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains a census-designated place that is subordinate to the county and is not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, this is an unincorporated area.
