Fairfield County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Winsboro .

The county is located in north central South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,839 square kilometers, of which 60 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Chester County , Lancaster County , Kershaw County , Richland County , Newberry County, and Union County .

history

Fairfield County was formed March 12, 1785 and converted into a judicial district on January 1, 1800. On April 16, 1868, it became an independent county again. The name is probably descriptive and refers to the "lovely" landscape.

According to the 2000 census , Fairfield County had 23,454 people in 8,774 households and 6,387 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 39.58 percent white, 59.09 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian and 0.44 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.07 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 8,774 households, 32.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.9 percent were married couples living together, 20.0 percent were single mothers, 27.2 percent were non-families, 24.4 percent were single households, and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.

26.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 27.8 percent between 25 and 44, 24.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 90.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,376 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,943. Males had a median income of $ 29,033 versus $ 21,197 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,911. 17.2 percent of families and 19.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
