Orangeburg County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Orangeburg .

The county is located just south of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of ​​2922 square kilometers, of which 57 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Calhoun County , Clarendon County , Dorchester County , Berkeley County , Bamberg County , Colleton County , Aiken County , Barnwell County, and Lexington County .

history

Orangeburg County was formed as a judicial district in 1769 and a county on April 16, 1868. It was named after Prince William IV of Orange , husband of Anna of England , daughter of King George II of Great Britain .

The White House United Methodist Church is one of 40 entries for the county in the NRHP.

As of the 2000 census , Orangeburg County had 91,582 people in 34,118 households and 23,882 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 37.17 percent white, 60.86 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.36 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.70 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.96 percent of the population.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,567 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,165. Males had a median income of $ 29,331 versus $ 20,956 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,057. 17.0 percent of families and 21.4 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
