Pickens County is a county in the state of South Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Pickens .
geography
The county is located in northwest South Carolina, borders North Carolina in the north and has an area of 1,326 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Transylvania County, North Carolina, Greenville County , Anderson County, and Oconee County .
history
Pickens County was formed on December 20, 1826. It was named after Andrew Pickens , a military leader in the American Revolutionary War and a member of the United States Congress .
In 1963 the Jocassee pumped storage power plant went online.
One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the former home of John C. Calhoun , Fort Hill . 28 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 29, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Pickens County had 110,757 people in 41,306 households and 28,459 families. The population density was 86 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.27 percent white, 6.82 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 1.18 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.70 percent of the population.
Of the 41,306 households, 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 31.1 percent were non-families, 23.3 percent were single households and 8.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95 people.
22.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 17.5 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 99.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 98.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,214 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,507. Males had a median income of $ 31,795 versus $ 22,600 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,434. 7.8 percent of families and 13.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
