The pumped storage power plant Jocassee ( English Jocassee Hydroelectric Station ) from Duke Energy is located in Pickens County of the US state of South Carolina . The four machine sets of the power plant, which went into operation in 1973, have a combined output of 710 megawatts . Lake Jocassee serves as the upper basin and Lake Keowee as the lower basin . On average, the power plant produces 811 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electrical energy annually, 988 GWh for storage.
