The Sandia National Laboratories ( SNL ) is a research and development facility founded in 1948, the US Department of Energy with locations in Albuquerque , New Mexico , and Livermore , California .

The main task is to develop, manufacture and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons . In addition, the SNL developed suborbital research missiles such as the Strypi and STARS , which are used to test ballistic weapons and missile defense systems.

SNL operates the Kauai Test Facility rocket launch site on the island of Kaua'i ( Hawaii island chain ).

According to its own information, more than 12,000 people worked at the institute in 2017.
