Livermore is a city in Alameda County in the US state of California , United States , with a population of around 81,000 in 2010.

geography

Surrounded by some (mostly brownish grass-covered) hills, Livermore is a typical medium-sized, sprawled west coast town. From InterState 580 east of the city you can see an approximately 5 × 5 mile (8 × 8 km) large wind farm with hundreds of wind generators of various types. The urban area has a size of 62.0 km².

history

The town was founded in 1869 by William Mendenhall and named after his friend Robert Livermore , a rancher who settled here in 1835 . The "Livermore High School" was founded in 1891 . The annual rodeo has been held in Livermore since 1918 .

On December 1, 2011, the discoverers of the chemical element with the atomic number 116 proposed the name Livermorium with the symbol Lv and adopted by the IUPAC on May 30, 2012 .

Laboratories

The largest employer in Livermore and of international importance is the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory . It was established in 1952 to participate in the planning and development of nuclear weapons as part of the national defense program. Today there are several IBM supercomputers on the site , including the IBM Sequoia, which is currently (as of June 2012) the most powerful computer in the world.

Sandia National Laboratories is also located in the city . Their main task is to develop, manufacture and test the non-nuclear components of nuclear weapons .

Viticulture

The Livermore Valley is also a well-known wine-growing region. In the early 1960s, the acreage was as large as the Napa Valley at the time. Still, it remained relatively unknown, while Napa Valley is now one of the most famous in the world.

traffic

Livermore has a regional airport that has around 150,000 flight movements per year. Interstate 580 is also used and is connected to the WHEELS bus system, which connects the city with Dublin , Pleasanton and the BART system. The Altamont Corridor Express also has two stops in the city.

There are two public high schools in Livermore : Granada High School and Livermore High School . There are also numerous middle schools, including Mendenhall Middle School and Junction Avenue Middle School.

Centennial Light

The “longest-serving” light bulb in the world shines in the fire station : the “ Centennial Light ” ('Centennial Light'). A 4 W carbon filament bulb has been providing light there almost continuously since 1901  . It only went out after a few power outages and has already moved several times when the fire station was relocated.

A webcam has been set up so that everyone can see for themselves whether it is still on.
