Livermore Valley AVA (recognized since October 1, 1982) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in Alameda County , just outside the city of Livermore .

The name of the city and the wine-growing region is Robert Livermore , a pioneer and large landowner in the region. With the Livermore Basin, the region has one of the five aquifers that supply the population of the San Francisco Bay Area with water and is used to irrigate agricultural areas.

Viticulture

By the early 1960s, Livermore Valley's acreage was similar to that of Napa Valley . While Napa has seen a real boom in viticulture in the past 50 years, the Livermore Valley has only benefited from the growing popularity of California wines in the past 10 years. The largest winery in the region is Wente Vineyards , which annually fills around 3,500,000 bottles of a relatively inexpensive wine that is primarily intended for export. In addition to Wente Vinyards, the Concannon Vineyard also has significant bottling volumes and produces almost 360,000 bottles per year. There are also around 40 smaller wineries (as of early 2008).

The most famous red wines in the region are made from the Petite Sirah grape variety . The warm climate also enables high must weights to be achieved, and appealing sweet wines are produced with the Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties (the seedlings come from the well-known French vineyard Château d'Yquem ) . Following an international fashion, the Merlot grape variety is increasingly used to produce better red wines.

Wine from the Livermore Valley may be marketed under the designations of origin Livermore Valley AVA, San Francisco Bay AVA and Central Coast AVA . The latter two represent superordinate areas.
