'Touriga Franca' is an autochthonous red wine variety from Portugal. Although the variety is usually still registered under its old name 'Touriga Francesca', it can no longer be officially named (for example on labels). France had sued Portugal for failure to use this designation and won the case in 2002.

Origin, descent

The red wine variety 'Touriga Franca' is a natural cross of the varieties ' Marufo ' × ' Touriga Nacional ' and is an indigenous grape variety from Portugal.

distribution

It is recommended to grow them in the Trás-os-Montes and Beira Litoral regions . It is also approved in the regions of the Douro , Minho , Ribatejo , Oeste and Madeira . It is also used for port wine . With a planted vineyard area of ​​around 7,440 hectares, it ranks 5th in Portugal's grape variety index. The worldwide cultivation area in 2010 was 11,590 ha.

Ampelographic features

  • The tip of the shoot is very hairy, white, with a reddish tinge.
  • The young leaf is round to slightly three-lobed, bronzed. The leaf is medium-sized, three- to weakly five-lobed with a V-shaped stem. The upper side of the leaf is coarse, strongly blistered, dark green and the underside gray-green and slightly rust-colored. The leaf margin is weakly serrated.
  • The grape is medium-sized, pyramidal, shouldered and compact. The berries are medium-sized, round, black-blue, scented.

The vines have strong growth and are productive. They prefer good, not too dry locations.

Wine

The variety produces ruby ​​red, light, not too tannic red wines , which, however, do not reach the quality of the wines of the ' Touriga Nacional ' variety . However, it is more productive.
