Alameda County is a county in the US state of California , located in the San Francisco Bay Area . The county seat is Oakland .

The county covers an area of ​​2,127 square kilometers. 1910 square kilometers are land and 216 square kilometers are water.

history

The county was created on March 25, 1853 from parts of Contra Costa Counties and Santa Clara Counties .

The term “alameda” means a place where poplars grow in avenues . The name itself was originally given to El Arroyo de la Alameda (Alameda Creek). The willows and plane trees on the banks of the river reminded the explorers of avenues.

The county seat at that time was initially in Alvarado and was later moved to San Leandro (1856). A few years later, the county seat moved to Brooklyn (1872-1875). Brooklyn is now part of Oakland, where the county seat has been since 1873/75.

There are 8 National Historic Landmarks in Alameda County . A total of 151 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Alameda County had 1,443,741 people. There were 523,366 households and 339,141 families. The population density was 756 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.79% White, 14.93% African American, 0.63% Native American, 20.45% Asian, 0.63% Pacific Islander, and 8.94% other races Groups; 5.63% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 18.97% of the population.

Of the 523,366 households, 32.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 47.00% were married couples living together, 13.00% were single mothers. 35.20% were not families. 26.00% were single households and 7.30% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.31 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.60% of residents under the age of 18, 9.60% between 18 and 24 years of age, 33.90% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 10.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.60 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 55,946 , and the median income for a family is $ 65,857. Males had a median income of $ 47,425 versus $ 36,921 for females. The per capita income was $ 26,680. 11.00% percent of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. 13.50% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.10% were 65 years of age or older.
