The Fresno County is a county in the state of California of the United States . The county seat is Fresno .
history
The area of today's county used to be an arid desert. The county was formed in 1856 from parts of Mariposa County , Merced County, and Tulare Counties . In 1861 parts of the county were given to Mono County and in 1861 to Madera County . The county got its name from Fresno Creek . Fresno means ash in Spanish . Millerton used to be a county seat. However, it was so badly damaged by a disaster that Fresno County Seat became. 1882 was the largest fire to ever break out in Fresno County.

Fresno County's population of 799,407 as of the 2000 census . There were 252,940 households and 186,669 families. The population density was 52 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 54.30% White, 5.30% African American, 1.60% Native American, 8.05% Asian, 0.13% Pacific islander, and 25.90% other ethnic group Groups; 4.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 43.99% of the population.
Of the 252,940 households, 41.20% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.50% were married couples living together, 15.20% were single mothers. 26.20% were not families. 20.60% were single households and 7.80% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.59 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 32.10% residents under 18 years of age, 11.10% between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.50% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 18.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 9.90% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 100.40 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 98.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,725 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,455. Males had a median income of $ 33,375 versus $ 26,501 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,495. 22.90% percent of the population and 17.60% of families are below the poverty line. 31.70% of these were under 18 years of age and 9.90% were 65 years of age or older.
