The San Benito County is a county in the state of California of the United States . The county seat is in Hollister .

geography

The county is located in the hinterland of the California coastline , near its western border runs the full length of the San Andreas Fault . Notable towns are only in the far north, which is closest to the Pacific coast and which is now part of the catchment area of ​​the Bay Area around San Francisco . In San Juan Bautista is the historic Spanish Mission Mission San Juan Bautista , located on the western border of the counties in the Gabilan Mountains of the Pinnacles National Park , a protected area of the Federation of particular importance for birds of prey.

history

The Spanish Franciscan Juan Crespí , who traveled the area several times from 1769 to 1772 and was the first European to describe it, named a river in what is now County San Benito San Benedicto . This gave the county the name.

There are three National Historic Landmarks in San Benito County , the Jose Castro House , the San Juan Bautista Plaza Historic District, and the Juan de Anza House . 11 other structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , San Benito County had 53,234 people. There were 15,885 households and 12,898 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 65.17% White, 1.08% African American, 1.16% Native American, 2.40% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, and 24.87% other races Groups; 5.14% were from two or more races.
