The Siskiyou County is a county in the north of the State of California . The county seat is Yreka .

The county has a total area of 16,440 square kilometers. Of this, 157 square kilometers (0.96 percent) are water. It is in the Cascades and on the Oregon border , bordered clockwise by counties: Klamath County , Jackson County , Modoc County , Shasta County , Trinity County , Humboldt County , Del Norte County, and Josephine County .
history
Siskiyou County was founded in March 1852 from parts of Shasta and Klamath Counties . In 1855 parts were spun off to Modoc County . It was named after the Siskiyou Mountains .
Siskiyou County has a National Historic Landmark , the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge . A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , Siskiyou County had 44,301 people. There were 18,556 households and 12,228 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.07% White, 1.31% African American, 3.90% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, and 2.76% other races Groups; 3.65% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.57% of the population.
Of the 18,556 households, 27.60% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.70% were married couples living together, 10.10% were single mothers. 34.10% were not families. 28.60% were single households and 12.80% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.00% residents under 18 years of age, 6.70% between 18 and 24 years of age, 22.70% between 25 and 44 years of age, 28.40% between 45 and 64 years of age 18.10% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 94.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,530 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,890. Males had a median income of $ 31,936 versus $ 22,650 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,570. 18.60% percent of the population and 14.00% of families are below the poverty line. 26.60% of them were under 18 years of age and 7.30% were 65 years of age or older.
