geography

history

In March of 1851 an incoming from Oregon found mule driver in the region gold. Another 2,000 prospectors followed within a month , sought their fortune there and built a settlement of tents, barracks and simple wooden houses. Regarding the naming, there are several versions: It is very likely that the name goes back to the Indian word wáik'a , meaning “northern mountain” or “white mountain”. According to another version, the place was named as a play on words Y-reka, based on the place Eureka, also in California (pronounced U-reka). Mark Twain gives a curious explanation in his autobiography : The name resulted from a mix-up. The owner of a bakery had freshly painted the letters of the advertising word BAKERY for his shop and placed them in reverse order to dry, only the letter B was not next to it. A visitor read the upside-down word YREKA (the B was missing) and assumed that this was the place name. The other residents also considered this assumption to be conclusive and so the place was called "Yreka" because of a palindrome . After the California gold rush ended , many adventurers left the place again. However, the appointment to the country administration opened up new employment opportunities. The place is currently gaining in importance in tourism and is the starting point for tours into the Siskiyou Mountains in the northwest and Mount Shasta in the southeast.

In the vicinity of Yreka you can find the very rare species of flame flower Phlox hirsuta , which is also called Yreka phlox there. The city administration has raised this plant to the status of a city flower .
