Shasta County is a county in the north of the US state of California in the Cascade Range . The county seat is Redding .
history
Shasta County was one of the founding counties in California in 1850. Parts of it were ceded to Siskiyou County in 1852 and Tehama County in 1856 . The name is derived from Mount Shasta, which is now in Siskiyou County and was named after the Indian tribe originally living there.
27 structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places .

Shasta County's population was 163,256 as of the 2000 census . There were 63,426 households and 44,017 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.32% White, 0.75% African American, 2.77% Native American, 1.87% Asian, 0.11% Pacific Islander, and 1.71% other races Groups; 3.47% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 5.51% of the population.
Of the 63,426 households, 31.70% had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 53.00% were married couples living together, 11.90% were single mothers. 30.60% were not families. 24.70% were single households and 10.20% had someone living there who was 65 years of age or over. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.10% residents under 18 years of age, 8.20% between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.30% between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.20% between 45 and 64 years of age 15.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.10 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 91.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,335 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,491. Males had a median income of $ 35,959 versus $ 24,773 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,738. 15.40% percent of the population and 11.30% of families are below the poverty line. 21.00% of these were under 18 years of age and 7.30% were 65 years of age or older.
