Redding is a city in Shasta County in the US state of California with around 92,000 inhabitants (as of 2016) and the seat of the county administration . The urban area covers an area of 154.4 square kilometers and is also a major transportation hub in the northern part of California off the coast.

Demographics

Around 92,000 people lived in the city in 2016, which corresponds to an increase of around 12,000 compared to 2000. Whites of European descent make up the majority of the population at around 85 percent, which is well above the California and US averages. Compared to 2000, however, this was a slight decrease of three percent. Just under 10 percent of Redding's residents are Latinos , who are much more represented in other regions of the state. With significantly less than five percent each, African American or Asian ethnic groups represent a minority. The 2010 census also registered around 36,000 households in the city. For every 100 women there were 93.8 men, while the median age was 38.5 years.

Worth seeing

In Redding, the 213 meter long Sundial Bridge was built in 2004 , which is a worthwhile stopover for visitors. The architect was the Spanish star architect Santiago Calatrava , who, as with most of his projects, has created a remarkable design with glass. The bridge cost $ 23 million to build.

Not far from Redding is the 183-meter-high Shasta Dam .

traffic

The city is a regional transportation hub with Interstate 5 and California State Routes 299 , 273 and 44 . There is an airport in Redding with the IATA code RDD. The city also has a dense rail link to the California coast and inland to other states.

climate

Redding is known for its extreme heat in summer, when temperatures of up to 50  degrees Celsius can be reached. This is due to the geographic location in the interior of the state of California far from the coast. Redding lies in a valley and is surrounded by higher mountain ranges, which means that the climate is more continental . Despite the hot summer months, this means that winters are often cold, with snowfall being the exception due to the low altitude. Occasionally frost is to be expected on cold winter nights , but during the day the temperatures are often in the single-digit range, which is noticeably cooler than at the sea. The lowest temperature ever recorded in Redding was −14 degrees Celsius. While the summers tend to have little precipitation , the winter and spring months have significantly more frequent and larger amounts of rain.
