life and career

societies

Rapinoe began playing soccer for the Portland Mavericks ' U-12 and U-14 teams before joining Elk Grove United . During her studies at the University of Portland , she played for the Portland Pilots from 2004 to 2008 , with whom she won the NCAA championship in 2005. Despite sustaining multiple knee injuries, she was among the Pilots' top attacking midfielders with a high scoring rate and was nominated for multiple awards. When the WPS started , she played for Chicago Red Stars . The team finished the season in sixth place. Rapinoe scored two goals in 18 games. This place was repeated the following season , in which Rapinoe scored once in 20 games.

In 2011 she played in the WPS four times for Philadelphia Independence . After the league interruption due to the World Cup, she received a contract for the now dissolved magicJack (previously "Washington Freedom"), where she scored two goals in eight games. As third in the table, they lost in the Super Semifinal against their previous club. In October she played two games for Sydney FC in the Australian W-League with her then partner Sarah Walsh. On the 29th, she scored the winning goal in a 2-1 win against Melbourne Victory . She then moved to Seattle Sounders Women . Since the league stopped playing in January 2012, it remained without a league game in the Olympic year.

On January 9, 2013, it signed a half year contract with the three-time UEFA Women's Champions League winners Olympique Lyon , although they at the same time by the US Soccer Federation ( USSF ) of NWSL - franchise Seattle Reign FC assigned had been. On February 2, 2013, the 15th matchday of Division 1 Féminine , she made her debut for Olympique Lyon and scored a matchday later on February 23, 2013, her first league goal against EA Guingamp . In the 2012/13 UEFA Women's Champions League , she lost with Lyon in the final against VfL Wolfsburg 1-0, and was substituted at 0-0 in the second half. After the end of the European season, she joined Seattle Reign FC in June 2013 as agreed and returned to Lyon on loan for the 2013/14 season. With Lyon, she failed in the 2013/14 UEFA Women's Champions League this time in the round of 16 due to the away goals rule at Turbine Potsdam . Her return to the USA, originally planned for after the end of the season, was carried out immediately in January 2014.

With Seattle Reign FC , she finished the 2014 season in first place and then reached the final in the NWSL Championship Play-offs, but lost it with her team against FC Kansas City , where she only scored the 1: 2 Final score succeeded. In the following season, Seattle was again first after the regular season, but lost the final again to Kansas City. She scored 5 goals and gave 5 assists, with which she was voted into the second NWSL Best XI team.

In the National Women's Soccer League 2016 , she was only used again on August 27 against the Portland Thorns . After being substituted on in the 79th minute, she scored the goal in the third minute of stoppage time to make it 3-1. It remained her only goal of the season and in the next four games she was only substituted on or off twice. Seattle, the best team in the league round in the previous two years, missed the playoffs for the championship as fifth in the league round, so that the season ended prematurely for them. Also in the following season it was only enough for fifth place. With 12 goals she was the third best goalscorer in the league and the best of her team. In 2018 she reached the NWSL Championship Play-offs with the club now trading as Reign FC as third in the table, where she was eliminated in the semifinals after a 1: 2 defeat by Portland Thorns FC . But it was first chosen in the NWSL Best XI.

National teams

Rapinoe went through several US youth teams. She took part in the 2004 CONCACAF U-19 Championship for women , in which the US team finished second and qualified for the U-19 World Cup. She scored three goals in three games. At the 2004 Women's U-19 World Cup in Thailand , where the US team finished third, she was used in five games and scored three goals.

Three weeks after her 21st birthday, she played her first international match against Ireland on July 26, 2006 , the first international goal followed on October 1, 2006 against Taiwan , when she scored the 9-0 in the 79th minute and three minutes later the gate to the 10-0 final score. After returning to her college team, she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture , preventing her from being used until 2009. At the Algarve Cup 2009 she was part of the team that lost to Sweden on penalties in the final .

She was only used again on May 22, 2010 when she was substituted on for record national player Kristine Lilly in the 69th minute of a 4-0 win against Germany . At the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup 2010 she played three games, scored two goals and also played both qualifying playoff games for the 2011 Women's World Cup against Italy , in which she provided the 1-0 winner in the second leg with Amy Rodriguez . In 2011 it was used in nine out of ten games, including victories in the four-nation tournament and the Algarve Cup .

She was part of the US squad for the 2011 World Cup in Germany . In the first World Cup game against North Korea , she was substituted on in the 79th minute when the score was 2-0. In the second World Cup game against Colombia , she scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the 50th minute. While celebrating the goal, she grabbed one of the outside microphones on the sidelines and sang Born in the USA to the amusement of the audience . In the quarter-finals against Brazil , which the USA won 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw, she hit the cross to Abby Wambach's equalizing goal and was the fourth US shooter to succeed on penalties. In the semi-final against France she was substituted on in the 65th minute. In the 82nd minute she gave the submission to the goal for the 3-1 final score by Alex Morgan . In the final she was in the starting line-up and put a lot of pressure, especially on the left side. In the 69th minute she sent a long pass from her own half Alex Morgan, who picked it up and scored the 1-0 opening goal. Since the Japanese equalized both this and the renewed opening goal by Wambach, it came to penalties, which Japan won 3-1. Since Rapinoe was substituted in the 114th minute, she was not used in the penalty shoot-out.

Rapinoe was part of the US squad for the 2012 Olympic football tournament and was used in all games. In the semifinals against Canada , which was won 4: 3 after extra time, she equaled the lead of the Canadians twice, converting a corner directly at 1: 1. With a 2-1 final victory over Japan , she won her first gold medal with the US team.

Rapinoe was also nominated for the 2015 World Cup and scored the first goal and the goal to make it 2-1 (final score 3-1) in the first game against Australia and was named Player of the Game. In the round of 16 against Colombia , she and Lauren Holiday received the second yellow card , which meant that both were suspended for the quarter-finals against China . Against Germany , she then returned to the starting line-up for the semi-final game. In the final against Japan , she was replaced in the 80th minute by Abby Wambach , who also played in the final. With the 5: 2 she became world champion for the first time.

Due to a torn cruciate ligament that she sustained during training during the Victory Tour following the World Cup, she could not be considered for the qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympic Games or the 2016 SheBelieves Cup .

She was then nominated again for the first time for the game against South Africa on July 9, 2016, but not used. She was still part of the 18-man squad for the Olympic Games, but only had short appearances in the two draws against Colombia and Sweden . Their team was eliminated from the Swedes in the quarter-finals on penalties and did not reach the final for the first time.

After the Olympic Games, she was nominated for the September Games against Thailand and the Netherlands , but only came on as a substitute. She was not nominated for the games in October against Switzerland , but was then nominated again for the games against Romania in November, but was not used there either. In 2016 she only had four missions. In 2017, however, she played 12 games again, in which she was in the starting line-up eight times. She could not win a title because the Tournament of Nations 2017 , in which she was in the starting eleven three times, only finished second. The next year was more successful: First, she won the SheBelieves Cup 2018 and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win against Germany. This was followed by winning the 2018 Tournament of Nations and the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup , in which she scored three goals. By winning the Gold Cup, the USA qualified for the 2019 World Cup.

2019 started for them with a 1-0 win against Spain . At the subsequent SheBelieves Cup 2019 , she scored the first goal in the two 2-2 draws against England and Japan . On April 4, she played her 150th international match in a 5-3 win against Australia and scored 3-2.

On May 1, 2019, she was nominated for the 2019 World Cup and thus her third World Cup. As a leading figure, captain and playmaker ("leader and tone-setter of the US team") she paved the way for the Americans to defend their title with six goals in five games - including her 50th goal in the final. Rapinoe won both the Golden Ball as the best player and the Golden Shoe as the best goalscorer of the World Cup. Through her appearance in the final, she is one of the six players who have made it to three World Cup finals. She and the German Birgit Prinz were the only ones of the six players in the three finals in each of the starting eleven, but Rapinoe was the only one who was always substituted.

Participation in the protests against racism

As early as 2016, Megan Rapinoe joined the protests against racism of various US teams, which were expressed by the fact that the athletes did not sing the national anthem (and usually did not stand, but kneel). The first person who noticed by the quarterback who was San Francisco 49ers , Colin Kaepernick . Rapinoe was the first white athlete to also refuse to sing along to the anthem. In May 2019, she announced in a conversation that she "will probably never sing the national anthem again," including the 2019 World Cup in France , as was also shown on television. After President Trump sharply criticized her on Twitter, she said she took no notice of haters . Despite the criticism, the team and coach stood behind her at all times and her teammate Alex Morgan described her as the heart of the team.

Private

In July 2012 Rapinoe publicly confessed to her homosexuality and her then partner, the Australian national soccer player Sarah Walsh . She then received the Board of Director's Award from the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center .

In August 2015, Rapinoe announced her engagement to American singer Sera Cahoone .

Rapinoe has been in a relationship with basketball player Sue Bird since autumn 2016 . Together, they were the first openly gay couple for the Body Issue of ESPN magazine, model.

Rapinoe's twin sister Rachael Rapinoe also played for Portland football and played for UMF Stjarnan in the UEFA Women's Champions League .
