The FIFA World Player of the Year 2004 (then still FIFA World Player ) was chosen on December 20, 2004 in the Zurich Opera House . It was the 14th award of the “ World Footballer of the Year ” award introduced by the FIFA World Cup in 1991 . The winner of the award was the Brazilian Ronaldinho .

Voting mode

The winner was determined by a vote among 157 national coaches and 145 national team captains. They each named the three best footballers in their opinion, although none of the three were allowed to come from their own country. An entry in first place brought five points, a second place three points, the third place one point. Then the points were added.
