The FIFA World Player of the Year 1996 (then still FIFA World Player ) was chosen on January 20, 1997 in the Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon . It was the sixth award of the “ World Footballer of the Year ” award, introduced in 1991 by the FIFA World Cup . The winner of the award was the Brazilian Ronaldo .

Voting mode

The winner was determined by a vote among 120 national coaches from around the world. They each named the three best footballers in their opinion, although none of the three were allowed to come from their own country. An entry in first place brought five points, a second place three points, the third place one point. Then the points were added.
