FIFA World Player of the Year 1991
The FIFA World Player of the Year 1991 (then still FIFA World Player ) was chosen on December 8, 1991 as part of the draw for the qualifying groups for the 1994 World Cup in New York City . It was the first award of the “ World Footballer of the Year ” award, newly introduced by the world football association FIFA . The winner of the award was the German and last year's world champion Lothar Matthäus .
Voting mode
The winner was determined by a vote among 66 national coaches from around the world. They each named the three best footballers in their opinion, although none of the three were allowed to come from their own country. An entry in first place brought five points, a second place three points, the third place one point. Then the points were added.
