FIFA Ballon d'Or 2010

World Footballer of the Year 2010
Lionel Messi

The 55th Ballon d'Or ( French for Golden Ball ) was awarded jointly for the first time in 2010 by France Football magazine and the world football association FIFA under the new name FIFA Ballon d'Or . For the fourth time, the world's best footballer of the year was honored. From 1956 to 2006 this trophy was awarded to Europe's Footballer of the Year. It is not identical to the World Footballer of the Year award given by FIFA between 1991 and 2009 , which will no longer be replaced in 2010 as a result of the agreement between France Football and the world governing body. After the three best players had already been published on December 6, 2010 - without their respective placement on the “podium” - the final result was announced on January 10, 2011 at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich . The winner of the Ballon d'Or 2010 was last year's winner Lionel Messi ahead of Andrés Iniesta and Xavi Hernández . All three players were under contract with FC Barcelona at the time .

Voting mode

The prize is awarded by a jury made up of 147 national coaches , 143 national team captains and 154 specialist journalists. Each of them gives five, three or one point to three players from a list jointly set by the France Football editorial team and FIFA. The performance of the players is to be recognized throughout the respective calendar year. Since the three groups of voters have different numbers of voters, but the votes of these three “electoral colleges” should each account for exactly one third of the total result, the absolute scores are then converted into percentages and published in this way.

statistics

A total of 426 jurors from 185 countries voted, including 154 journalists and 136 coaches or captains of the respective national team. So 18 of the 444 voters did not vote. In exceptional cases, some (partial) votes were deleted, for example Bert van Marwijk and Mark van Bommel , who each illegally placed their compatriot Wesley Sneijder in first place - van Bommel and Arjen Robben in second.

Overall, the result this year at the top was tighter than in the two previous years. The participation of three groups of jurors, introduced in 2010, was also reflected in a more differentiated picture, even if there was overall unanimity about the best four players:

Journalists' votes

The overall fourth Sneijder (320 points, 35 first places) prevailed ahead of Iniesta (313/40), Xavi Hernández (248/36) and Messi (182/18).

Votes from the national coaches

This group had the same order in the first four places, which was also reflected in the overall result: Messi, who was at the top on 51 ballots, clearly ahead of Iniesta (23), Xavi Hernández (27) and Sneijder (9). There was only a difference in fifth and sixth place: for the coach, Cristiano Ronaldo was ahead of Diego Forlán.

Votes by the national team captains

The players also saw Messi as the best of the year (45 first places), but then Xavi Hernández (26) followed in front of Iniesta (17) and in fourth place Sneijder (15).
