Arjen Robben (born January 23, 1984 in Bedum , Netherlands ) is a Dutch football player .

He turned professional in his six years at FC Groningen , moved to Eindhoven and left the Netherlands at the age of 20. After stints at FC Chelsea and Real Madrid , he played for FC Bayern Munich from 2009 to 2019 , with which he won numerous titles. For the Dutch national team he played 96 internationals and took part with her in three world championships and three European championships . Robben mostly occupied the position of the right winger as an attacking midfielder , but was also used on the left wing or centrally before his time in Munich.

After he had declared his active career over in the summer of 2019, he meanwhile coached the youth team in which his son played. In June 2020 he announced that he would play football again at FC Groningen.

Career

Beginnings and Groningen

Robben started playing football at VV Bedum , the amateur club based in his birthplace , and switched to the youth academy of FC Groningen at the age of twelve . On December 3, 2000, at the age of 16, he played - after substituting for Leonardo dos Santos Silva in the 77th minute - in the goalless draw in the away game against RKC Waalwijk, his first game in the Eredivisie ; it followed 17 more missions in which he scored two goals. Robben was voted Player of the Year at the club in his first season. Together with Jordi Hoogstrate , who was six months older and whose career ended early due to a knee injury, he demonstrated the strengths of Groningen's youth academy. In the following season he became a regular player and scored six goals in 28 games, two of which on February 20, 2002 in a 4-1 win in the away game against FC Den Bosch .

PSV Eindhoven

The three big clubs Ajax Amsterdam , Feyenoord Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven became aware of Robben. For a long time it seemed like he was going to join Ajax, but when his name was misspelled on the contract form, Robben's father decided Ajax was not the right club for him. He signed with PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2001 a contract from the 2002/03 season , in which he contributed 12 goals in 33 games to the 17th championship . His strike partner Mateja Kežman and he were affectionately known by PSV fans as “Batman and Robben”. Among other things, he won the title of “Most Talented Player of the Year” . After this good year, PSV could not keep up with Ajax Amsterdam in the following season, and so it was only about second place in the league. The season was also disappointing for Robben, as several muscle injuries only allowed 23 league games in which he scored five goals.

Chelsea FC

Champion with Chelsea 2005

After Robben also impressed at the 2004 European Championship, he was signed for the 2004/05 season by Chelsea manager José Mourinho for a transfer fee of £ 13 million . After an injury-related break at the beginning of the 2004/05 season Robben came on October 23, 2004 in the game against Blackburn Rovers to his debut for Chelsea when he came on in the 65th minute for Aleksei Smertin . This year he played another 17 league games and 5 games in the Champions League . With Chelsea he became English champion in 2005. This success was repeated in the following season . On the way to the new championship title, he scored 6 goals in 28 games. In the 2006/07 season he scored 2 goals in 21 league games. During the second half of the season, Real Madrid expressed interest in signing Robben. In his three years in London he won all possible national titles.

real Madrid

Robben in Real Madrid jersey (2009)

As early as 2006, Ramón Calderón promised to bring Robben to the club when he ran for the presidency of Real Madrid . The matter became more urgent after the German coach Bernd Schuster asked for reinforcements in the 2007/08 preseason and also referred to the Dutchman. The move finally came about on August 22, 2007 for £ 24.5 million. And Robben, who was also keen to move, received a five-year contract. He made his debut for Real on September 18 in a 2-1 Champions League match against Werder Bremen when he came on for Raúl after 84 minutes . He quickly became an integral part of the team and contributed four goals in 21 league games to the 2008 Spanish championship.

At the start of the new season he won with Real and the Spanish Supercup in two games against the cup winners Valencia CF . In the league it was only enough for the runner-up. However, the change from coach Bernd Schuster to Juande Ramos from the 15th matchday onwards became essential for him . Ramos moved the left-footed left winger to the right. There, the sprint on the outside line became the goal line, from there diagonally back into the penalty area and shot at the goal with links to his trademark. Having scored only once so far that season, he scored six more goals on the right. In total, he came to 29 league games in 2008/09.

For the 2009/10 season, Florentino Pérez was a new president in office. He signed the Chilean Manuel Pellegrini as the new coach and brought in high-priced new players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaká . The 25-year-old Robben had become redundant. Reluctantly, he was finally persuaded to leave the club.

FC Bayern Munich

2009/10

Robben before the Champions League second leg against Manchester United (2010)

At Bayern, Louis van Gaal was signed as coach from the start of the 2009/10 season . On August 28, 2009, Robben's commitment for 24 million euros was announced. He received a four-year contract and the jersey with the number 10. Just one day later in the Bundesliga home game against VfL Wolfsburg  - as a substitute in the second half - he scored two goals. Together with the Frenchman Franck Ribéry on the left, Robben formed a pair of wing tongs, which in the following years was also known as "Robbery". As a center forward, Mario Gómez , Miroslav Klose and Ivica Olić , who was brought in from Stuttgart for 30 million euros, played alternately . Thomas Müller completed the attack line of FC Bayern Munich, who played in the 4-2-4 system. Bastian Schweinsteiger , who until then had been driving the offensive game of FC Bayern Munich on the right side, was converted into a “six” by van Gaal .

In the Champions League season 2009/10 Robben distinguished himself with two game-winning goals. In both the round of 16 against Fiorentina and in the quarter-finals against Manchester United , Bayern had won the first leg 2-1 at home and were 3-1 behind in the second leg away. Arjen Robben scored the next goal to make the final score 2: 3, whereby FC Bayern reached the next round due to the away goals rule . FC Bayern Munich reached the final in Madrid, but lost it 2-0 to Inter Milan .

In the DFB Cup semifinals, Robben also made it into the final with the decisive goal to make it 1-0 nV at FC Schalke 04 - a goal in which he successfully completed an assault over two thirds of the field. There he scored the opening goal with a penalty kick after 35 minutes in the 4-0 win against Bremen.

In the championship, won by five points over Schalke 04, he scored 16 goals in 24 games - he had a few injuries - making him Bayern's top scorer with 13 goals ahead of Thomas Müller. In the Bundesliga he was fifth; Edin Dzeko was the top scorer with 22 goals.

After the end of the season he was selected by the Association of Contract Footballers for the 2009/10 season . He also won the vote for Germany's Footballer of the Year 2010 - as the fourth foreign player and third in a row - towards the end of the year.

2010/11

In a test match against the selection of Hungary just before the 2010 World Cup Robben suffered a hamstring . Since he was used during the World Cup, the extent of the injury worsened, causing him to be out for the entire first half of the 2010/11 season . There was a dispute over the question of guilt between FC Bayern Munich and the Dutch Football Association . The association finally agreed to play a friendly game at FC Bayern in May 2012. With the income the association should be compensated for the loss of Robben.

On January 15, 2011 Robben returned to the start of the second half of the season against VfL Wolfsburg . He came on for Franck Ribéry in the 25th minute. In the following game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern he was part of the starting line-up and with his goal contributed to the 1-0 to the 5-1 success. Robben had 12 goals and 10 assists in a total of 14 Bundesliga games.

2011/12

Robben taking a free kick in the 2012 Champions League final against Chelsea

At the beginning of 2012, coach Jupp Heynckes left him temporarily on the bench , partly due to injuries .

On April 11, 2012 Robben missed a penalty in the important Bundesliga game at Borussia Dortmund and missed another chance to score. On April 25, 2012 Robben converted a penalty in the semi-final of the Champions League against Real Madrid in Madrid. With this goal, FC Bayern Munich reached extra time and ultimately won on penalties . Robben reached the final of the Champions League this season with FC Bayern Munich . There he missed another important penalty with a score of 1: 1 in the first half of extra time . His team lost in the end on penalties with 3: 4 against Chelsea .

2012/13

At the beginning of the 2012/13 season Robben suffered several injuries, so that he could not get beyond the role of the supplementary player. Even if he wasn't injured, Heynckes didn't prioritize him. Xherdan Shaqiri came up with more missions than seals. Heynckes often preferred a 4-3-3 system and preferred Toni Kroos in the team. Robben came to 16 Bundesliga games - five times as a substitute and seven times. In his 988 minutes on the field, he scored five times. FC Bayern Munich became champions with a 25-point lead over defending champion Borussia Dortmund.

On February 27, 2013, he moved into the DFB Cup quarter -finals for the red-banned Franck Ribéry in the starting line-up and scored the goal for a 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund . FC Bayern Munich finally won the cup with a 3-2 win in the final over VfB Stuttgart. Robben played a total of five times and scored four goals.

In the 2012/13 season Robben played four times in the Champions League in the group stage and in the round of 16 against Arsenal FC and scored once. When Toni Kroos tore a muscle bundle after 16 minutes in the quarter-final first leg at Juventus Turin and was thus out for the rest of the season, Robben was used and played permanently for the rest of the season. FC Bayern won both games against Juventus 2-0. In the semi-final first leg against FC Barcelona , FC Bayern won 4-0. Robben initiated the first goal and scored the 3-0 himself. In the second leg, which FC Bayern Munich won 3-0 away, he took the lead shortly after half-time.

In the Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium against Borussia Dortmund, he was the strongest outfield player in Bayern Munich. In the 60th minute he prepared the 1-0 through the Croatian center forward Mario Mandžukić and finally scored the 2-1 winner in the 89th minute and secured Bayern the Champions League title, which was narrowly missed last year.

By winning the championship, Champions League and DFB Cup, FC Bayern won the triple for the first time that season .

2013/14

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season , Robben won the UEFA Super Cup with FC Bayern on penalties against his former club Chelsea . On November 30, 2013, he scored twice in the game against Eintracht Braunschweig and scored his 50th Bundesliga goal in his 90th Bundesliga game with the goal to make it 1-0.

In the DFB Cup round of 16 on December 4, 2013 in Augsburg , he suffered a tear in his knee when he scored 1-0 in a clash with goalkeeper Marwin Hitz , which forced him to take a six-week break. The 2013 FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco took place without him. Before his injury, he was directly involved in 29 goals in 27 consecutive games. In the 2013 election as world footballer , Robben finished eighth. On January 24, 2014, he returned to the field in the away game against Borussia Mönchengladbach . In the DFB Cup final on May 17, 2014, he scored the 1-0 in the 107th minute in a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund . At the end of the season he came third in the “ UEFA Best Player in Europe 2014” election. He was voted “Bayern Player of the 2013/14 Season” by Bayern fans.

2014/15

Robben in the Champions League game at CSKA Moscow (2014)

On February 27, 2015 (23rd matchday) Robben scored his 17th goal of the season in a 4-1 home win against 1. FC Köln with the goal to make it 3-1, surpassing his previous record from the 2009/10 season , in the he came up with 16 goals this season. On March 7, 2015, Robben achieved his 100th Bundesliga win in the 126th Bundesliga game with FC Bayern's 3-1 away win against Hannover 96 , setting a new Bundesliga record. The previous record was held by Willy Sagnol and Thomas Müller , who each needed 148 games for the first 100 wins in the Bundesliga. In the 0-2 home defeat against Borussia Mönchengladbach on March 22, 2015, Robben had to be replaced in the 24th minute of the game. He tore his abdominal muscle and was absent for several weeks. On April 28, 2015, he made his comeback in the DFB Cup semi-final match against Borussia Dortmund when he was substituted on in the 68th minute of the game. However, he was replaced 16 minutes later after tearing a muscle bundle in his left calf, which in turn meant his premature end of the season.

2015/16

In preparation for the 2015/16 season, Robben returned to team training. On August 29, 2015, he played his 130th Bundesliga game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, overtaking Roy Makaay (129 Bundesliga games) as the Dutch player with the most appearances for Bayern Munich.

2016/17

Seals During Training (2017)

After Robben missed the start of the 2016/17 season again due to injury, he made his first competitive appearance against Hertha BSC on September 21, 2016 (4th match day) and scored the goal to make it 3-0. On December 2, 2016 Robben played his 150th Bundesliga game in a 3-1 away win against 1. FSV Mainz 05 and scored with a header to make it 2-1. In 2017 he won the German championship for the fifth time in a row .

2017/18

With the 2-0 goal in the 2-2 home game against VfL Wolfsburg on September 22, 2017, he drew 92 goals equal to Giovane Élber, Bayern's most successful foreign goal scorer. On October 18, 2017 Robben played his 100th game in the UEFA Champions League in a 3-0 win against Celtic Glasgow and was only the second Dutchman to reach this mark after Clarence Seedorf (125 games). With the goal of 1-0 in the 3-1 win in the away game against Borussia Dortmund on November 4, 2017, he became the most successful foreign goal scorer of FC Bayern Munich and the most accurate Dutchman in the Bundesliga. In 2018 he won the German championship for the sixth time in a row . His expiring contract with FC Bayern Munich was extended by one year until summer 2019.

2018/19

In December 2018, Robben announced that he would be leaving Bayern Munich after the season. At the end of the season he won his eighth German championship and his fifth German Cup after a total of 10 years at FC Bayern. He played his last Bundesliga game on May 18, 2019 in a 5-1 home win against Eintracht Frankfurt . He scored the goal to the final score with his 99th hit on the first floor. In total, he played 201 games in the top German division.

On July 4, 2019, he announced his retirement despite existing contract offers, for example from the United States and China .

FC Groningen

In June 2020, Robben's youth club FC Groningen announced the return of the winger, who signed a one-year contract.

National team

On April 30, 2003 Robben made his debut in the senior team in a 1-1 draw against the selection of Portugal under bond coach Dick Advocaat . At the European Championship in 2004 he came to four missions and ousted Marc Overmars from the team. In addition, he converted the decisive penalty against the selection of Sweden and secured the Dutchman's entry into the semi-finals , which were lost 2-1 to the selection of Portugal .

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Robben was part of the Elftal's squad , for which he played three games as a regular and scored the 1-0 winning goal in the preliminary round against Serbia / Montenegro . He was also part of the Netherlands squad at the 2008 European Championship , was used in two games and scored one goal.

At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he reached the final with the team. He did not play in the first few games because of a muscle injury he suffered in preparation for the World Cup and was used for the first time in the last group game against Cameroon . His first appearance from the start of the game was in the round of 16 against Slovakia , in which he also scored the 1-0. On the way to the final, he scored another goal in the semifinals against Uruguay with the goal to make it 3-1. He lost the final with the team 1-0 after extra time against Spain .

At the EM 2012 Robben retired with the Dutch team after three defeats in the group stage from the tournament.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he scored two goals in the first group game in a 5-1 win against defending champions Spain . After losing to Argentina in the semi-finals, the game for third place was won against Brazil. Robben was honored with the bronze ball as the third best player at the 2014 World Cup and was elected to the World Cup's All-Star Team.

Robben succeeded Robin van Persie as team captain of the "Elftal" at the end of August 2015 . Exactly one year after his last international match, he was used again on November 13, 2016 in the qualifying game for the 2018 World Cup in a 3-1 away win against Luxembourg and scored the goal to make it 1-0 in the 36th minute. After the team failed to qualify despite a 2-0 win against runners-up Sweden , he resigned on October 11, 2017. Robben scored 37 goals in 96 international matches.

Style of play

Robben has been a classic winger who was used on both flanks. For example, he played on the right wing at FC Bayern Munich, while he was used on the left wing for a long time in the national team before he was also used on the right wing at the 2010 World Cup at his own request. Because of his speed, his technique, his tight ball control and goal danger, he was considered one of the best outside players in the world.

A characteristic feature of Robben's style of play was his quick start on the outside lane, then pulling in just before the opponent's penalty area and mostly looking for the end from the right wing on the edge of the penalty area. He scored numerous goals especially in the Bayern Munich jersey.

Others

Robben was among the 23 nominated players for World Footballer of the Year 2010 in the first half of the year up to the 2010 World Cup final . Since he had missed the entire second half of the year due to his injury, he finally finished 14th.

Robben is the only player to date to have scored a goal in three DFB Cup finals : the 1-0 in the 4-0 win against Bremen in 2010 , the 1-1 in the 2-5 defeat against Dortmund in 2012 and the 1-0 in the 2-0 win against Dortmund in 2014 .

Robben has been married since June 2007 and has a daughter and two sons. His father Hans is his advisor.

From autumn 2019 Robben trained the F2 juniors of TSV Grünwald for several months in his place of residence Grünwald immediately south of the Munich city limits.
