Manuel Luis Pellegrini Ripamonti (born September 16, 1953 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean soccer player and today's soccer coach . Pellegrini can look back on numerous engagements as a coach and a long time as a player in South America . He is currently the head coach of Betis Sevilla .

Player career

Because Pellegrini graduated from school and his civil engineering studies with top marks, his parents allowed him to begin a career as a professional footballer. The trained defender Pellegrini remained loyal to his club CF Universidad de Chile throughout his playing career . In a total of 13 years (1973-1986) he played in 451 league games for his club.

Coaching career

The beginnings in Chile

After his playing career at Universidad de Chile, Manuel Pellegrini was coach from 1987 to 1989. In 1990 he went to the club after 16 years and joined the Chilean first division club Deportivo Palestino . After just one season, however, he stopped again to sign a contract with Club Deportivo O'Higgins . After only one season, he changed clubs again.

First successes

In the two seasons from 1994 to 1996 he not only won the Chilean Cup with CD Universidad Católica , but also the Copa Interamericana . Now he decided to take a break and return to Palestino in 1998. After an unsuccessful engagement, he went abroad for the first time for the 1999/2000 season. There he looked after LDU Quito , with whom he immediately reached the domestic championship.

Argentina

At San Lorenzo and River Plate he has so far celebrated his greatest successes. The Chilean joined River Plate in 2002. Pellegrini made a name for himself with a championship each with San Lorenzo and River Plate in the whole of Spanish-speaking countries. Among other things, he reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana with River Plate .

Villarreal CF

In 2004, Manuel Pellegrini surprised the sports world with his move to the Spanish first division club Villarreal . After spending his entire career as a player and coach in South America, he now dared to make the leap to Europe. Immediately after his engagement, he introduced a trend towards South American players among the Spaniards, as he knew his way around particularly well. Some Argentine players like Juan Román Riquelme were signed. He made a name for himself across Europe by reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League 2005/06. In March 2006, Pellegrini's contract with Villarreal was extended by one year until the end of the 2006/07 season, before the contract was extended again in December 2007 (this time until 2010).

real Madrid

On June 1, 2009 it was announced that Pellegrini had been signed as Real Madrid's head coach . With the Chilean, the club achieved the highest number of points in the club's history in the 2009/10 season . Nevertheless, they finished the season only in second place behind FC Barcelona . Since you also stumbled over a third division team in the Copa del Rey and did not get beyond the round of 16 in the Champions League , Pellegrini was sacked at the end of the season.

Málaga CF

On November 5, 2010 Pellegrini took over after the dismissal of Jesualdo Ferreira as coach of the Spanish first division club Málaga . With the club financed by Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al Thani at the time , Pellegrini finished the 2011/12 season in fourth place in the table. This was the best placement in the club's history and after a successful qualification led to Málaga's first participation in the UEFA Champions League . Although top performers such as Santi Cazorla , Salomón Rondón and Joris Mathijsen had to be sold for the 2012/13 season due to financial bottlenecks as a result of the sheikh's withdrawal , Pellegrini reached the quarter-finals of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League with Malaga . This was the greatest success in the history of the Andalusians. In May 2013, Pellegrini announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season. Previously, FC Málaga had been banned from all European Cup competitions for one year by UEFA as part of financial fair play because of its debts.

Manchester City

For the 2013/14 season Pellegrini took over the first division eleven from Manchester City and led the club to its fourth league title. His contract was valid until June 30, 2016.

Hebei China Fortune

On August 27, 2016, Pellegrini took up his post as head coach at the Chinese club Hebei China Fortune.

West Ham United

On May 22, 2018, Pellegrini became head coach at West Ham United . He was released on December 28, 2019 following a 2-1 home defeat to Leicester City . West Ham had lost nine of the previous twelve games at the time of the dismissal and was one point ahead of the relegation places in 17th place in the table.

Betis Seville

On July 9, 2020, the Spanish club Betis Sevilla signed him as a coach. He got a contract until 2023.

International

In the 1990/91 season, in addition to his club activities, he was the U-21 national coach of Chile. At the Copa America in 1991 and 1993, he was Arturo Salah's assistant in the senior national team.
