Aïssa Mandi ( Arabic عيسى ماندي, DMG ʿĪsā Mānadī ; * October 22, 1991 in Châlons-en-Champagne ) is a French - Algerian football player who has been under contract with Betis Sevilla in the Primera División since 2016 .

Career

society

Aïssa Mandi comes from the Champagne region in northeastern France and joined the youth department of Stade Reims in 2000 . At the age of 17 he was used in the second team, which played in the second highest amateur league. In the 2009/10 season he was used there regularly and was allowed to play in the first team once. At that time, this still played in the French third division , but managed to get promoted.

In Ligue 2 , Mandi was in the professional squad from the start the following year and also made two appearances, but then played for the greater part of the season in the second team before he returned at the end of the season and even became a regular in the last four games. In the 2011/12 season , the defender was an integral part of the team that returned from Stade Reims to the top division in France after more than 30 years. He was also able to keep up with ease in Ligue 1 and established himself as a right defender in the team. He made 29 appearances this season and then extended his contract with Reims until 2017.

In the following three years he remained a regular in Reims. The team settled in midfield of the French premier league and Mandi played an average of 30 games per season. In 2014/15 he took over the captain's armband several times and in 2015 he became the official team captain. At the same time he switched from the outside position to the central defense.

In 2016 he got an offer from Betis Sevilla and moved to the Spanish Primera División before his contract expired . He signed with the southern Spaniards until 2021. He asserted himself as a regular player in central defense and, despite two injury breaks, made 26 games in his first year. The team finished the season in 15th place on the table.

National team

After Aïssa Mandi had shown himself successfully in the first division of France, the Algerian national team also noticed. Half a year before the 2014 World Cup , he was invited to an international match for the first time at the age of 22, but was not used. It wasn't until March 5, 2014, before he made his full-time debut in the national shirt against Slovenia . After just one more friendly match, he was accepted into the 23-man squad for the World Cup in early June.

He then remained a regular in the Africa Cup qualifiers . The team won the 5 games in which he was involved and in the final round Algeria made it to the quarter-finals. The next World Cup qualification did not succeed, but in the next Africa Cup qualification the team was successful again with its participation. In a preparatory game for the main tournament against Mauritania on January 7, 2017, Mandi wore the captain's armband for the first time and he was the official captain of the cup. However, the team had no win in the group stage and was eliminated.

In 2019 , he and the team won the Africa Cup by beating Senegal 1-0 in the final and played in six tournament games.
