The Slovenian national football team is the selection team of the European state Slovenia . Slovenia played its first international match in 1991 after the country split from Yugoslavia . Before that, the Slovenian players played in the Yugoslav national team .
The Slovenian footballers achieved their greatest successes to date with the qualification for the European Football Championship 2000 as well as the Football World Championship 2002 and the Football World Championship 2010 , whereby they were eliminated in the preliminary round.
In qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Slovenia failed to Italy and Norway .
For the Soccer World Cup 2010 in South Africa , the national team was able to prevail in the play-offs against Russia . In the first game of this tournament they won 1-0 against Algeria . Against the USA it was enough after a 2-0 lead to a 2: 2 and the 0: 1 against England meant the end in the preliminary round, as the USA in the parallel game shortly before the end by a 1-0 to Slovenia and England passed by.

Participation in soccer world championships
Slovenia was part of Yugoslavia during the World Cup tournaments held until 1990 . The Slovenes Branko Oblak 1974 and Srečko Katanec 1990 for Yugoslavia took part in the world championships. After the break-up of Yugoslavia, Slovenia took part in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup for the first time. With six attempts, the team was able to qualify twice for a World Cup. In qualifying for the 2002 World Cup, Slovenia was able to prevail against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia .

Participation in European football championships
After the break-up of Yugoslavia, Slovenia took part in qualifying for the European Championship in 1996 for the first time and has so far qualified for a final round. Branko Oblak also took part in the European Championships in Yugoslavia in 1976 and Srečko Katanec in 1984 in the European Championships in France .
