Jan Oblak (born January 7, 1993 in Škofja Loka ) is a Slovenian football goalkeeper . He is under contract with Atlético Madrid and plays for the Slovenian national team .

Club career

NK Olimpija Ljubljana

He started his football career at his hometown club Ločan. At the age of 10 he moved to the Olimpija youth team. The club went bankrupt in 2005 and later traded under the name Olimpija Ljubljana . There he played until the 2009/10 season and at the age of 16 this season also made his debut in the professional team of Olimpija Ljubljana.

Benfica Lisbon

In 2010 he signed a contract with the Portuguese club Benfica Lisbon. In the following years he was loaned to several Portuguese clubs and completed 50 league games. In the 2013/14 season he first played for Benfica Lisbon and got just 6 goals in 24 games. He was named the best goalkeeper in the Portuguese league this season, played in the UEFA Europa League final with Benfica Lisbon and won three titles (championship, cup and league cup).

Atlético Madrid

The following season he moved to Spain to Atlético Madrid. The move (€ 16 million) made him the most expensive goalkeeper in Spanish football league history. He made his debut for Atlético Madrid in the Champions League group game against Greek club Olympiacos and in the Spanish league in a 2-0 home win over Getafe. In the 2015/16 season he was named the best goalkeeper in the Spanish league and reached the final of the UEFA Champions League with Atlético Madrid . In mid-April 2019, he extended his contract prematurely until June 2023.

National team

He made his debut in the U21 national team in 2009 and for the senior national team in 2012 in the World Cup qualifier against Norway. Initially only the number 2, Oblak rose to the goalkeeper of the Slovenian national team after the resignation of Samir Handanović .

His older sister Teja is a professional basketball player and also plays in the Slovenian national team . He is not related to his first coach at Olimpija Ljubljana, former Yugoslav international Branko Oblak .
