Career
In the club
Álvaro Morata's first significant position as a junior was Atlético Madrid , in whose youth teams he was active from 2005 to 2007. After a year at the Madrid suburb Getafe FC , the then 15-year-old finally moved to Real Madrid's youth team in the summer of 2008. After a season in the Juvenil C (U-17) age group, he rose to Juvenil A (U-19) and then to the third team Real Madrid C in the 2009/10 season . That year he won the Copa de Campeones , the Spanish U-19 club championship.
In the summer of 2010, Morata became part of the Real Madrid Castilla squad , the club's second team. He played his first game in Segunda División B on August 29, 2010 against Coruxo FC . His first-team debut followed on December 12, 2010 in a league encounter against Real Zaragoza , when he came on for Ángel Di María in the 88th minute . He was also involved in the “Royal” cup victory with an appearance in the round of 16 at 8-0 against UD Levante . In the 2011/12 season he came back to a game in the professional squad. In the Real Madrid Castilla second team this year, Morata mainly acted as a left winger, while his team-mate Joselu took over the attack center. His team achieved promotion to the Segunda División and the championship title in Segunda B, where he himself contributed 15 goals in the group stage and three more in the promotion playoff.
For the 2012/13 season, Morata was included in the squad of the professional team. On November 11, 2012, he scored his first goal in the Primera División when he headed the 2-1 win against UD Levante after being substituted on .
For the 2014/15 season , Morata moved to the Italian record champions Juventus Turin . In Serie A he became Italian champion straight away with the team supervised by Massimiliano Allegri . In the Champions League of the same season, Morata reached the final with his team . In the semifinals against his ex-club Real Madrid, he scored one goal each in a 2-1 home win in the first leg and in a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Madrid. In the final against FC Barcelona he equalized the 1: 1. The game ended 3-1 for Barcelona.
For the 2016/17 season , Morata returned to Real Madrid via a buyback option. At the end of the season he won the championship with Los Blancos and, after 2014, the UEFA Champions League again . However, he rarely got beyond the role of substitute, as coach Zinédine Zidane continued to rely on Karim Benzema in the storm . Regardless of this, Morata scored 15 goals in 26 league games, making him the second best league shooter in the Madrilenians after Cristiano Ronaldo . Already in the second half of the 2016/17 season, Morata publicly expressed his displeasure with the too short playing times.
For the 2017/18 season , Morata moved to Chelsea in the Premier League .
In January 2019 Morata returned to his youth club Atlético Madrid on loan for a year and a half . By the end of the 2018/19 season he made 15 league appearances under Diego Simeone (13 times from the start), in which he scored 6 goals. As early as the 2019/20 season, Atlético agreed with Chelsea on the acquisition of transfer rights after the loan expired.
In the national team
Morata played with Spain in the 2009 U17 World Cup , where he scored two goals in four games and won the bronze medal with his team. At the U19 European Championship in 2011 , he won the title with Spain by beating the Czech Republic 3-2 in the final and was also the top scorer of the tournament with six goals. He made his U21 debut in the course of the 2013 European Championship finals . Morata played a convincing tournament, was used in all five matches and was the top scorer of the competition with four goals. The Spaniards prevailed against Italy 4-2 in the final and won the European championship title in this age group for the fourth time.
At the European Championships in France in 2016 , he was included in the Spanish squad. He was on the starting line-up in all games and with three goals he was the Spaniard's most successful goalscorer. In the second group game, the 3-0 win against Turkey , he scored two goals. Against Croatia , in the last group game in the 2-1 defeat, he brought his team 1-0 lead. The team also lost the subsequent round of 16 against Italy and was eliminated.
On May 21, 2018 it was announced that Morata would not be part of the Spanish squad at the World Cup finals in Russia . Spain coach Julen Lopetegui said: “We didn't want to take four players for the same position. I have to choose, it hurts, but I have now made the decision ”. With Diego Costa , Rodrigo Moreno and Iago Aspas , Morata had too much competition.
