The Copa de Campeones de Liga Juvenil , mostly short Copa de Campeones (to German: Champions Cup ) is in Spanish football 's highest club competition for youth teams (U-19) and determines the champion of each season. It has been organized in alternating modes by the Spanish federation, the Real Federación Española de Fútbol , since 1986/87 . The record champions are Real Madrid with 11 titles.

Competition mode

League mode (1985-1995)

With the establishment of a national A youth championship in 1986, a master was determined for the first time. The first division, called División de Honor Juvenil , played 16 teams in league mode with a return leg. The team that scored the most points after 32 match days won the championship.

Tournament mode (since 1995)

The first Copa de Campeones in tournament mode was held in Linares at the end of the 1994/95 season . Participants were Racing Santander , FC Barcelona , CA Osasuna , FC Sevilla , Real Madrid and CD Tenerife . The title won Real Madrid, which was able to prevail in the final against Sevilla FC. In order to remedy the problem of the long and costly travel that a national league mode entails, the Spanish association decided to divide the league into several seasons from the 1995/96 season. Since then, the División de Honor Juvenil has been divided into seven (until 2006 six) groups of 16 teams each, put together according to regional proximity. These play a round-robin tournament with a round trip. The seven champions of the regional groups qualify for the Copa de Campeones . Following the leagues, this will be played in tournament mode at a location chosen by the association. As a rule, two groups are formed in which everyone plays against everyone, the two best placed qualify for the semi-finals, from which the master is determined in the knockout system .
