geography

The Municipio Imías has a total area of 527.48 km². It is bounded in the south by the Caribbean or the Atlantic Ocean , in the west by the Municipio San Antonio del Sur , in the north by Baracoa and in the east by Maisí .

traffic

Imías is crossed by the well-developed and largest highway in Cuba, the Carretera Central near the coast. It allows the community a good connection to the provincial capital Guantánamo and the city of Baracoa, which is interesting for individual travelers. Until the revolution under Fidel Castro , this road only led to Imías. Between 1964 and 1965 the revolutionaries had the 120 km long La Farola pass built to complement the Carretera Central road. It connects the village of Cajobabo on the south coast with the city of Baracoa on the north coast. Built from the stones of the "Sierra de Purial", the demanding route became one of the greatest technical achievements of modern Cuba. For the first time since its completion, it has connected Baracoa with the rest of Cuba by land.
